I think he was getting at how much good music was coming out in such a dark time...

Anyone recommend any good books on the Vietnam war? I know nothing about it in detail and feel pretty bad about that.

I think 'my bad' is an americanism for 'silly me'.
As for book recommendations..
..and a hard rain fell by John Ketwig.
Dispatches by M.Herr.
The dvd Hearts and minds is an eye opener too..

I thought the theme music for the Vietnam war was 'paint it black' by the Stones.

Oh no it was Country Joe

I was not around at the time but spending a year hitching around the US in the 80s I met enough Vietnam vets to realise some of the long term human cost. It's pretty hard when you go off at 18 thinking you're doing your duty, live through that horror then come home not to a hero's welcome but to find that everyone thinks you shouldn't have been out there, 15 years later many had not readjusted. Lord knows what it was like from a Vietnamese perspective.

I visited Vietnam in 2007 and it was awesome - really really loved the place. Did a bit of reading beforehand and the ones I would reccomend,
Chickenhawk (as mentioned above is a superb read - i left mine in the majestic hotel in saigon as i had finished it and needed space to bring stuff back)
Dispatches (as mentioned above) is essential reading - I couldn't put it down.
A bright Shining Lie is a must read.
Vietnam - A history should be read after A Bright shining Lie - very well put together text.
The Girl in the Picture is a great insight into individuals of the photo everyone has seen.
The Sorrow of War - stunning book written by a North Vietnamese Soldier.

I truly loved this country and didn't want to come back home. Hope the books are of interest - i loved them.

Now that's gotta be exciting! I was lucky enough to grow up with all that on vinyl in my parent's collection and played it all from a very young age. If 6 was 9, 1983 a Merman I Should Turn to Be, Castles Made of Sand, the list goes on and you're in for a real treat! The charts today have nothing on the bands back then if you ask me...
