How waterproof is tweed?

I'm no expert, but I have a feeling that being wool based (?) it would be pretty weather resistant until it got soaked, then it would take an age to dry.
Not sure if that's accurate, but that's what I would guess.

I am always surprised at how weatherproof tweed is. It absorbs a lot of water and stays warm. Takes a while to dry though.

It will keep the weather out, and still keep you warmish whist soaking wet - But!!!! It weighs a ton when soaked !!!!!!!! and takes an age to dry out !!!!!!

I have a tweed riding jacket which is brilliant throughout the winter due to the fact that it's warm and waterproof, I've got the feeling it's been treated though?
