Bought a small neck knife and just wondering do I buy a neck chain (breakaway type) or leather thong or make up a paracord type , if so how elaborate do I go , any advice much appreciated .

I'm the same as jdodger, although i'll use leather thong at times, the thong usually gets pressed into other projects, hence the changes.
I don't bother with breakaways but that's an entirely personal choice, safety may be more pertinent to others.

I also carry them in the 'knife pockets' of my fjallraven barents or foresters, or the cargo pocket of my craghoppers.

Mine hangs of a neck lanyard with my lighter and keys. It gets stuffed down my top to stop them jangling.

If you make the cord long enough and put both neck and one arm through it, you're very nearly as safe as using a breakaway - in some ways safer as a breakaway won't stop you from falling should you accidentally hook the cord over a branch while falling off a cliff. Tenuous perhaps, but then so it getting snagged up such that you strangle yourself without having a breakaway :)

Like Adze has suggested, I carry mine under my arm using paracord and again with two fishermans knots that allow me to adjust the length.

I carry an Opinel No.8 in a pouch more often than I carry a fixed blade and that dangles a little differently:

I've a Hultafors which I carry under my arm - I guess it depends a lot on the size of the knife and how quickly you want to be able to get at it. The Opinel is more or less for 'kitchen' tasks and if it takes a few more seconds to de pouch it's never bothered me. Emergency carving though and I'm all about performance with the Hulti :)
