How do I find land or find the owner of some land?

I am looking for land to practice and teach survival skills and navigation.

I have applied to woodlands.co.uk but so far there has been no response. How do I find out who owns land around me? Are there any woodlands 'forums' that I can delve in to?

I have used this online service before for one of my hobbies, the only downside is if you want detailed info for lots of places then its £4 a go. This suites me just fine though, and the usual no affiliation etc.

Go to the nearest farm, knock on the door and ask who own the woodland, they will usually be able to tell you but make yourself presentable when asking cos being neat and tidy goes a long way with some people.

I suspect that's the route I'll go down although woodlands.co.uk have got back to me with the offer of land close by.

What exactly is the offer, to buy/rent the land or just contact details for the owner ?

I tried them as a long shot 4 or 5 years ago and never heard anything back.

All land in the uk needs to be registered, so you should try the land registry office, they will tell you who the land owner is

Unfortunately a lot of it isn't. The registry is a relatively new thing, at least in terms of capturing that information well. A lot of especially agricultural land passed hands without any legal formalities in the past and I'm sure it still does! Even where the land is registered, the details of the owner may be out of date.

Frequent a country pub and get talking to the locals.
I've gained loads of ferreting permission just by chatting over a pint.

If anyone's like me, I really don't like people turning up on my doorstep unannounced.
I think a lot of people look upon it with a degree of cynisism in this day and age.

When I've been tracing people and the Land Registry were unable to assist with accurate records, I enquired in the vicinity.

The Parish Records may be of use, and as has been said, local knowledge may be an asset, farmers, local residents, agricultural suppliers/specialists, tree surgeons, village halls, shops, pubs and etc.

Local Authority records and local associations may also help.

It works for me.

EDIT: I forgot to add, also try Land Agents, whom tend to have interesting records.
