Newbee here. Just getting into it all but still a farmboy at heart.
Been on a couple of courses (made a spoon or four) and made my first knives.
The hook knife wouldn't bite, but talked to a carver at Sandringham show. Real nice bloke from Essexs way. Spoke about tempering and I was shown that my hook knife was too thick. Works better now.
