I was thinking it had something to do with fabrics/sewing/stitching.

Not really your age, Sir John, but I just had to joke.....

A picture from the sides would be useful.

To small for cooking. To small and dainty for workshop/industrial use.

Punch the pit out of cherry/date/olive. And the act of opening to release the fruit, not allow the pit to drop through the hole?

Nope. The pit has to be pushed straight through the tool and out.
Is there a pit sized hole on the side?
also the cherry would not stay in the tool. Olives have the wrong shape, they are more oval.
I have a cherry depitter, and it works 90 degree from this one, the depitting rod goes into the cup shaped part, and there is a hole in the cup to push the pit through.

I'm getting a really weird sense of deja-vu, I'm sure I've seen one before, and I get the feeling I said cherry pitter last time too, and it turned out to be for some exotic fruit or vegetable, but I just can't latch on to the memory

Good job!

It is weird though. I do indulge in the odd Montecristo and Cohibo Maduro, but can not imagine not removing the tip of the wrapper leaf, just piercing the tip.

There is no edge to cut the wrapper.

Faulty design, hence it is not used today?
