From Mike's collection (my late husband) this curio. I have no information on it, I cannot see any makers marks on the prybar or the leather case. I assume they were custom made as Google Search doesn't bring anything up in the searches that I have done. If anyone has any clues it would be really appreciated.

I have got it up for sale and this post is not to boost that, I got asked today by a member of Bushcraft asking what this is and I would like to respond with more information than just prybar. Thank you.

Others will know far more than do I but:

It could have been anyone who had a couple of MAPP blowlamps, a few lumps of fire brick and a couple of big hammers. They wouldn’t even need an anvil; I’ve used the head of a 14lb sledge hammer instead for small jobs - like your prybar.

Oh - and a certain amount of skill.

A friend of mine used to make little knives out of steel rope with just that equipment and an angle grinder.

On the other hand, someone here might recognise a distinguishing feature and name the maker. Is the sheath original?

Yes the sheaf is original I might examine that to see if there are any distinguishing marks thanks

From what I’ve seen of Mike’s collection of knives and EDC, this won’t be any old forged prybar, it’ll be something from a known maker.

If you post it here, you’ll get replies along the lines of “it’s a hand forged prybar” :lmao:

I’m sure you know this is probably something with pedigree, hence your question ;). It’s a pity EDCForums is no longer, but maybe Multitool.org or one of the American sites would know more?

Without a known makers mark I doubt you'll find out who forged it. As Pattree said any semi competent blacksmith could make it.
Yeah, but it won’t be that, the guy knew his EDC better than anyone I’ve ever come across, his collection is exceptional.

For instance, the edges aren’t hammered, they’re ground. Like G10 sculpting on knife handles, and the steel is folded damascus so it’s not just an everyday forged item.

Similar pattern here, it became popular during the handmade EDC explosion about 2010 ish.

With that sheath and finish, could it be a Ru Titley? Not sure about how persistent he is with a maker's mark though.

Be a good place to start, Ru had his eyes to the ground and might know who’s work that is even if he didn’t make it himself.

I’ve distant memories of chunks like this coming up on BB in groups of 4 or 5 in the makers classifieds.

@Stew has a good memory for these things.

I've had a look but it doesn't tickle any memory at all! Not a sausage.

I would doubt it's Ru - just doesn't have the right feel to it.

The sheath has a vaguely Pennillion / Mik vibe. I'll drop him a note later and ask.

Please excuse my very real and comprehensive ignorance but:

Is this tool really a prybar. I’ve never seen this broad angled lifting edge before.

Is the steel hardened or soft?
Could it be a striker? (Hence the grinding with a carborundum ball.)

It looks “rustic” but that could be an intentional effect of course.

The face that isn’t decorated looks unfinished to me - but that’s me.

I too thought that, but it's not Mik, he's the one who suggested Colin and Dave.

A very nice person in this group identified the item for me it is a

By the way, your item number 22 from the other post (22. Heavy weight metal prybar with leather case and tether), it is also a Justin Silvers item, it is hand forged out of Damascus steel, he was selling it for $95. You can see it on his Instagram Post dated 14 February 2020.

Thank you K
