I wonder if anyone could help me identify something I saw in the woods today.

I was in oak/beech woods in the Chilterns and came across what seemed to be a nest made of leaves which had two furry tails sticking out of it. The nest was about three foot off the ground.

Then as I watched an animal came along and got in, crawling along branches above my head and then down to the leaves. It was like a cross between a squirrel and a mouse, with a bushy tail and slightly protruding eyes. I'm sure it wasn't a squirrel, I see enough of them. I've tried to identify it by comparing it with pics of dormice, wood mice and voles and nothing seems to fit.

No photo's I'm afraid, it all happened too fast.

Yes, it was a glis glis. It fits the description perfectly and the wood was in the middle of the area they are found. Thanks very much guys.
