Mine is a 7. Handle is slightly modified incl a lanyard hole, finished with boiled linseed oil.

No. 7 all the way.

Still have my first one of some 30 years. Re-profiled the sharp tip to make it more rabbit paunching friendly.

Need to apologise as should have said an “Opinel #8 all the way” and not the #7. Just shows how long it is since I used one.

Hi all,
Interesting thread, I have a carbon No.8 which I typically use only for whittling. From a novice's point of view its not much difference in performance to the s/s version but note the ease in sharpening.
Without wishing to hijack the thread, I wonder if someone could advise on best practice for keeping the carbon blade clean. I try to take good care of my blade but some black spots have appeared and I wasn't sure what is the best way of cleaning up the blade?

If you don't mind compromising the wider patina very fine wire wool and a thin oil will be fine. You might try rubbing with toothpaste too.
