Hello there! I am relatively new to all this and although i have had a keen interest in bushcraft for many years (countless books, dvds etc....) i am actively looking to get out there and do some serious bushcrafting. gonna get me on a course in the new year! i am just starting to compile my basic kit collection and was wondering if any of you knowledgeable folks have any experience of the helle fjellkniven?? i know the frosts mora is a popular choice for beginners but i really like the look of the Helle. Any help you could give would be great!!!

Hi and welcome

I don't have any personal experience but have heard they are generally good knives. However, if you are new to knives, in the sense of looking after them and sharpening them etc then get a Mora or a Frosts Clipper.

Learn to sharpen it so that you can shave the hair on the back of your arm then buy something else if you feel the need. I, like many others, had problems at first with sharpening. It's all to easy to ruin a good knife by not sharpening it properly.

Hi Dan
Welcome to the forum! Ive a Helle Harding (I think?) its a very nice wee knife, not to big for carving and hold a sharp edge well. The laminated steel seems quite a bit harder then my Mora which is carbon steel. but ive had no problems sharpening it.
I brought it on holiday but think it cost about £60 this puts it in the mid price range - not as cheap as a Mora but not as expensive as a handmade knife.
My knife dosn't throw any sparks at all with a firesteel if you are looking at using one, though I cant comment on the Fjallkniven.
The Helle knives are to me more astheticaly pleasing then the Mora and therefore feels of better quality.
If you want to buy a Helle I think it is a good first choice though I agree with Andy W also, why not get both then you can use the Mora for the heavy work and sharpening practise and save the Helle for the fine carving etc.
Buying bushcraft knives can be addictive before you know your spending £100's on them!
Hope this is useful. Ed

Hi! I realy like my fjellkniven and if i wasn't besotted with Grohmanns it would be my favourite. Personally I prefare it over Moras and Ragnar over at ragweedforge was kind enough to drop the point for me. Its a lot of knife for under thirty quid (US$59)

PS theres a pic of it (No. 4) on this thread, he didn't take much off but it made it just the shape I was after.

ive got 1 of each a helle and a mora. The thing with moras is for £10 you wont be bothered about using it for splitting stuff eg smashing a peice of wood onto the spine to force it down but the helle is the 1 i take with me ,i also lend the mora to my son but i wouldnt lend the helle.THE Helles are better for big hands i find the mora clipper handle a little bit to thin but my son says its good and the helle,s to big .but he,s a kid

I've got a harding for years. The first one devoloped a small gap between the bolster and the wood. Helle sent me a brand new knife!

Besides great customer service, the knife is really nice. It's razorsharp, has got a great handle and looks nice.

I can't fault the Helle's in any way, allthough I agree with the above. Get a mora to. Practise your sharpening. That way you won't destroy your Helle.

I've got a Harding too, and a Mora. The blade shape and thickness are very similar. The blade material on the Harding is easy to sharpen but retains its' edge better than the mora. It doesn't throw much of a spark though. The handle is very ergonomic, as well as cosmetically nice, and the sheath is very decent.

At the risk of repeating everyone elses advice, if I had my time again I'd but a Mora first and see what I liked and disliked about it.
