Looking at the Rutlands site I came across Helko axes,

http://www.rutlands.co.uk/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/10051

Now, I'm no axe wielder so am no judge of these things but I'd like to know if these are any cop? Do they do the job and does the design lend itself to just carrying the head and making a handle up when required? Ok thats not very practical but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I've probably missed a thread else where haven't I?

I'm in the market for an axe myself. pretty cool idea, I'd worry about the screws splitting through the wood at the top after a hefty swing. The 700g axe is fairly cheap and might be handy to keep in your pack just incase, but for the price of the universal axe a little more will get you a Gransfors SFA.

I'm in two minds on that axe.

My first thought is "gimmick"

My second thought is "don't listen to first thoughts"

I'll let you know when third thoughts kick in. I'm worried about drilling the grain in that orientation tbh

For a "fabricate handle on site" you would be better with a friction fit tomahawk type head to be honest. I've tried it - don't like it. Its a compromise at best and the handle is the lightest bit. I have a fantastic axe that weighs 500g - why bother with half measures?
