Beaten to it by Brizzlebrush but here is confirmation from the RM web page that bladed items can be sent using the age verification service
You won’t be able to do age verification for sharps.So the independent makers do what?
New scissors for schools? Nope
Bonkers, bonkers, bonkers.
However, it does look as though you can use age verification.
Quote from their website below:
- UK - Allowed in the mail, with product restrictions and packaging guidelines. IMPORTANT NOTICE: on and from Monday 22 April 2024 Bladed Items will be prohibited by Royal Mail for all UK destinations.
- These items may only be sent using the Royal Mail Tracked Age Verification service (this service is only available through Royal Mail Click & Drop
- Package appropriately so items present no risk to employees, other postal items or recipients.
- Wrap heavy cardboard around sharp edges and points, strong enough to ensure that the contents do not pierce the outer packaging.
- Wrap each item with cushioning material and place in a suitable outer container such as a padded envelope.
- The sender's name and return address must be clearly visible on the outer packaging.
- Marked to clearly indicate a bladed item is enclosed
Which private companies? A number already have sharps banned.lol. absolutely brilliant. The private sector delivery industry will just step in and fill the void. No need to panic. The royal mail are really expensive anyway. This is all part of the continuing surveillance and restrictions which are being subjected to. I really like what it says about still being able to use the age verification service for non bladed items. So all porn purchasers and alcoholics can sleep soundly.
That's the key, there's an expectation that only businesses will be able to send out knives and they will have to have business accounts with the couriers. I think it will mean postage goes up for bladed items and they're obviously going to be harder to send for anyone not a business, or not with a couriers business account that accommodates blade items.
I know someone that sells safety razors and this affects them as much as us wanting to send knives.

Items not specifically mentioned, but which will or could fall foul of this:
I can see a lot of nice used tools currently sold on eBay simply vanishing from the market.
- wood working tools - planes, spoke shaves, chisels, gouges, obviously crook knives and spoon gouges, scorps.
- Leather working tools, head knives, obviously, but also skivers, groovers.
- all saws, including power saws if shipped with blade.
- secateurs and loppers
- scissors and shears
- Archery arrow tapering tools
- Pencil sharpeners
I can see a lot of nice used tools currently sold on eBay simply vanishing from the market.
I wonder if we will soon see collectors mass selling off their collections .. maybe just keeping their most cherished knives ?
To be fair, pencil sharpener related deaths have been a huge issue for this country... especially when concealed in envelopes.
