Hi can anyone tell me when i can harvest Walnuts  .(Bearing in mind i live in Scotland)

Food for Free says round about now but i got one off the tree at my front door and removed the soft green outer skin. Now the juices stained my hands for the next week or so. :nono:

Please help as i want to beat the local squirrels this year :AR15firin

Hi Halfdevil333. Walnuts. Used to have a couple of trees near my last place. Haven't been lucky enough to find any trees locally now.

You're right about the stained hands. I remember that well. Looks like some sort of lurgy...as you say it should clear up in about a week!

Hope you get the walnuts before the sqirrels. Enjoy!

The way to tell they are ready is when the outer husk starts to crack revealing the nut inside. At this stage the husk/ shell comes off easily from the nut and results in less staining. You can use rubber gloves too.

I think you can pickle them green. :)

edit; oops way too late misses says that's an end of June thing!

Young trees often produce rubbish nuts for a few years before they get going.
The husks also turn darker when they're about to fall if I remember right, although they also rain down green.....anyway to avoid getting stained you can hang them up to dry out whole in mesh bags and then get rid of the husk before further drying.
:)
