Hard tack

May seem like a dumb question, but anybody know anything about "hard tack"?
It seems that all my favourite bushcrafters, (John Muir, Thoreau et al) used to take it all over the shop, but I've never found out exactly what it is. I am a dab hand at home baking, so any recipes would be gratefully recieved......

The only reason they carried hardtack was because they forgot how good ground parched corn was for them.
