I made a few from a hazel stick while camping years ago. I had no tin or wire, so I bound the end with a few turns of hemp garden twine tied with a constrictor knot. I tied them first before splitting, so the split stopped at the binding rather than running all the way through.
Once home, they got a wipe of linseed oil which really fixed the twine and stopped it absorbing rain. They have lived in the peg bag in constant use for years now, making the other pegs look bad.

That sounds so much like the ones my Granny had. I think they were bound with either lime inner bark or willow. I mind watching one of the ladies twisting fibres and making string. I think they'd been 'squared' off to take off the bark more efficiently, just four quick swipes and a few trim ups. Notch for the string, and the spilt didn't even go right to that, iimc.

So went and got me some hazel today, came home and try as I might I couldn't find my tin snips so an Ali coke cola can and scissors had to be used instead. Quite pleased with the results, very rustic and authentic looking apart from the shiny Aluminium but I'm sure that, like the wood itself, will eventually weather in.
Was almost tempted to put a wash on so I could go out and use the first batch but that will be tomorrow's job, along with making some more pegs.
I love it when a plan comes together!
