It's always good to get a bit of hands on experience, and I like to know my way around my med kit as much as I can. So, here's my first attempt at a simple interrupted suture.

The wound.

Flushed out the debris and cleaned the wound up.

First stitch. Started at the half way point to get an even spacing along the wound.

Tied off with a surgeon's knot, trying to get the correct tension. Looking back, I probably could have gone a wee bit tighter. Second stitch, keeping to the next half way point.

Managed to get six stitches out of it. Perhaps not the neatest job, but it seems to hold well and could be adjusted as necessary.

Most, if not all threads like this have a gore warning. I’ve got an 8 year old grandson, who’s a fussy eater, here for the day, and he likes looking at fires, knots, bows and arrows. It’s usually fine to let him scroll about on his own, knowing this is a child friendly forum.

It’s not exactly difficult to type ‘Gore warning’ is it? I’m not complaining about the content.

The pork roast may not be getting cooked today.

I'm not looking to fallout out with you Nice. I tend to think we get on.

But I honestly don't think an 8 year Old reading a thread saying ' Gore Warning' isn't going to still click through.

Personally I don't see the photo contents as very gory at all - but I respect our opinions will all vary on that matter.

I think hide tags would be appropriate - it's a bit too close to a human limb on first glance! I'm sure there wa a similar rule for dead animal pics in the food section but I could be misremembering.

As to the subject in hand, a nice idea for practice! Are you going to do another run and change anything?

I was squinting at these pictures for a good few minutes trying to work out what part of human anatomy this was. :D

Nice - looks like they'd do the job.

As for squeamish... someone posted photo of a decapitated hanging deer the other day, I am not sure that this is that big of a deal. It's all part of nature.

Pic took a while to load for me and I assumed it was an arm.

When I realised what it was I thought you could have added some stuffing first!

With the recent storms something worth practising.

Firstly, apologies for the laughing reaction to your first post, I honestly took it as a joke.

Re the images. I agree with much that has already been said, but out of respect, I'll just add my thoughts on it. Personally I see very little difference between this and skinning/butchering/preparing and eating meat. In this case the context is medical/educational. They're not usually subjects I would consider gory, in fact in many ways I think a certain amount of exposure at a young age is a good thing. I won't bore you with my opinions on that or whose responsibilty I think it is to monitor internet usage for children, but you do raise some interesting questions, so always happy to discuss them.

To be honest, I think adding a gore warning would feel a bit insincere, but I hear your point, so I've changed the title to show a little respect to your position.

What’s the red stuff around the slash? What’s it doing there?

Edited to add:
I’m not sure that it’s blood and it certainly shouldn’t be either around the cut or beneath it even if it is blood.

Sorry but I suspect the motivation for this post.

I think the triage is questionable; shouldn't he have dealt with the blood loss from lost hand first? :)

How is any post titled 'Interrupted Suture' going to be easy viewing though? :)
He’s 8, he doesn’t know what a suture is. On seeing the post I assumed it was an arm or thigh injury.

Even on BritishBlades where a lot of the stalkers would gralloch and dismember their prey, they’d either use hide tags or just pre-warn, and it certainly was done here too with butchering rabbits and deer. I’m not questioning the content, or offended, I’m just saying it’s no trouble to do it, and it’s polite to do so.

I remember being at Bardsters where a lesson was being given by Roestalker of how to cut a deer into chunks which we cooked and ate. My wife asked what we were doing, and I simply said don’t go in unless you’re ok with seeing a deer being chopped up, so she didn’t. So yes, it’s nature, but not everyone is ok with having the processes of wound repair or butchery presented without warning.
