I think the situation was that Golite were finding that they were being pushed out of the market by cheap imports. So instead of selling their tents to middlemen/retailers for half the retail price, they'd sell many more by selling direct to the end user at the old trade price. So this is why the prices in the US are half what the old retail price used to be.

Their decision not to sell abroad seems a bit short-sighted though, as that could probably nearly double their total sales volumes. And as long as the shipping cost covered all costs and insurance,with a bit of a margin on top of that, it shouldn't cost them anything either, yet still be very attractive to end-user customers. Witness the ad on ebay mentioned above from a smart individual in the US who has added over $150 to the price he's buying the tent from Golite, and probably making a nice wedge on the shipping cost of $75 too for international export!
