For anyone interested. If you are not interested/don’t care about AI and privacy, please feel free to close the thread.

This is a problem for several reasons. Firstly of course is the privacy concern of your private emails being PRIVATE and not for Google to be reading. Though it's possible they did this anyway, but at least the data was held securely.

The main issue is that if private data is used to train an LLM, that LLM is privy to any private data you have within your emails. Name, address, bank balance, emails from solicitors or your bank or family. As that information is absorbed by the LLM, it therefore technically becomes accessible to anyone who is able to 'trick' the LLM into sharing it. Google will of course put various code-based safeguards in place to try and stop its LLM from disclosing any private data, but this relies on 1) Them knowing what data is or isn't 'private', and 2) malicious parties work out how to bypass/trick the LLM into ignoring these safeguards (this happens all the time)

Turning this feature 'off' will disable 'categories' and a few other things, because Google has tied useful features to 'smart' features to try and get people not to turn off their ability to train LLMs with your data. Deliberate enshittfication (this is a word in the dictionary and not a swear).

------

Here is how to disable it:

1. Click the cog in the top right of the screen
2. Click 'See all settings'

3. Untick the box that enables 'smart features'

4. Go to the bottom of the page and click 'Save'

I've also read that there is a new Windows 11 AI feature update which automatically takes a screenshot of your desktop every few seconds.

I have completely boycotted them for years now. They are a dark force. I do not even say their name. Disgusting company. I am glad you highlighted it Chris. Many people have no idea what they are up. DD xxx

Thanks for the heads up- the box was already unchecked in Gmail for me, and I removed the copilot thing from my computer as soon as I bought it, along with anything else uninstallable I didn't need.

You have to select to enable Windows Recall; it's off by default.

I'm sorry, but who in their right mind doesn't go through all the privacy settings on a new PC, Phone, or OS upgrade without turning all the privacy settings to private?

And - who is still using gmail?

I do the first, but I'm so uninterested in internets/computers that I use gmail and I can't be bothered to change. Due to your comment I'm now dimly aware there might be something better but I'm not going to act any further ;)

Unfortunately, quite a lot of people (to both).

It doesn't help that these companies tend to hide privacy invading features behind inoccuously named features which are bundled in with actually useful stuff. There should be laws in place to stop them doing that in my view, it's hardly 'freedom to choose' if you have to suffer needless service degredation to turn something off.

GMail has its place in some of the things I do (tech related), but you're right. For most people I'd recommend something like ProtonMail. Free plan is fine, but I've paid for the upgraded plan and their VPN service for a few years now and highly recommend.

I strongly suspect that the concept of cyber-privacy is an illusion.
I often wonder why people make such a big deal of online privacy, we'll all be dead and gone in a few years, why do we care so much that marketing profiles are set up, that our phone mics or cameras may be being used, that Google are using our emails to train AI models? I couldn't care less.
