german knife info circa 60's ?

HI guys ,

My dad gave me his old scout knife [ he is 58 ] so the knife is pretty old now , it has "whitby soligen germany " on the blade , I have tried doing afew searches to find out more about it but havent came up with much other than soligen in germany seems to be big steel and knife making [ or was] .

any idea what this knife would be used for ? or any other info you guys might have ?

Interesting one to ask about over on BB - I think the actual German Scout knife was a rebadged Hitler Youth design, also a Solingen made piece, which is still available today (in 'little hand' size too) - but that is a very different design to the one you have there ... see HERE

It looks like a hunting knife to me.

I'll have a look on the german sites and see if I can get some info on it for you. Are there any other marks or numbers on it?

"Whitby" on the blade probably refers to "Whitby and Co" a British company based in Cumbria and who are still in business - drop them a line they probably imported/distributed the knife.

The "Solingen Germany" is most likely the place of manufacture (like "Sheffield England" ) and just refers to where it was made, not the company it was made for.
A generic hunting/belt knife made for Whitby and co in Germany is my best offering

That's a one of thousands made for the market scout knife. Sold in every army surplus place in the land int he 60's and 70's.
Most of them are marked Solingen, the two we have still in the house are.

Come to think on it, there was a thread about them not so long ago, because I posted photos.
Age wise, my husband is older than your dad, and I'm younger, the two knives we have fit round the one you show.

Regardless of who made it and where, it's your dad's old scout knife that makes it rather valuable and very important - to YOU!

I'd use it - it was designed as a practical user, so use it and enjoy the feeling of keeping a little bit of living history alive. It may not be a top quality custom, but it's certainly not cheap chinese c**p either, so I'm sure it'll stand up to enthusiastic normal use.

@Dom - have you looked at any of the available 'chinese c**p'? A lot of the mainstream makers are using chinese companies to produce stuff, and charging a ridiculous mark-up for it. The days of sub-standard rubbish being the norm have gone - ask the big boys

Fair comment - I know a lot of stuff made there these days is pretty good. I was thinking of older stuff, particularly with this being an older knife.
