They sound great. Any idea where we can get them please. Any available in the UK?

Probably not available in the UK. But you get some results if you try "Loden Gamasche" on Google Images. Maybe you have to order from Austria or southern Germany. But you can buy Loden cloth and go to your local taylor (have a look at the string closure, imho a zip does not work in severe cold).
There are summer versions made of a thin layer of Loden, and heavy duty gaiters made of high quality so called "Schladminger Loden" (that's a region in Austria).

Here you go, Loden gaitors in "einfach" ( one layer of fabric) or "doppelt" (two layers):
two sizes.
* Größe I - 40 cm long (calf-circumference up to 47 cm) [1inch = 2.54cm]
* Größe II - 45 cm long (calf-circumference up to 47 cm)
