I saw something similar in use the last time I went paragliding with the Army. A guy was using one on a tandem flight to get some very dynamic shots in flight. They really caught the feel of the whole thing. A tripod can be used if it has a good tilt function on it, you basically hold the legs, but it weighs a bit more! But, with the right bolt and a good stout walking staff......!

You can use a monopod too. It's bit easier to hold than a tripod and generally lighter in weight; good for shooting above people's heads in crowds as well.
