Anyone know what this fungi is?, found it growing on a sycamore today

Looks very like Piptoporus betulinus ( Birch polypore) and despite its name can be found tolling the death knell on many deciduous trees. Would not eat it, very tough, even when young. Though not poisonous.

Hmmm - birch polypore has a narrow attachment as I recall. Don't think it's that, but I could be wrong.

No. You are quite right, but from this angle I cannot be sure about the attachment.
