Had a brief stroll through a Caledonian forest in the Cairngorms yesterday. I was absolutely blown away by it. Seemed to be mostly spruce, larch, Scott's pine, with an understory containing plenty of bilberry among other things. I found penny buns and chanterelle withing minutes of being there. Many orchids too. Thetford forest just won't cut it anymore. I was surprised that the bilberries were already ripe. I'm used to seeing them ripen on hillsides late summer and autumn. Is this because the forest is more sheltered? Damper? Same with the fungi too. The forest seems to have its own distinct season.
