My slouch hat has this little seam at the edge of the brim, which in my mind makes this the back.

It would annoy me for reasons I cannot describe if it was at the front.
May I suggest 28.26 degrees to the left of an imaginary centre line.

I do appreciate that it must concern you or you wouldn’t be asking. Mine is worn, soft and has no chinstrap. As long as the crown is at the top I wouldn’t be able to tell you which way it was.

This sort of thing always makes me think it's a particularly cruel joke on humanity that English should have become the language of the world.

An is normally used before a vowel. H is the only exception where 'A' is used if the H is pronounced, but 'An' is used if the H is silent and the following letter is a vowel.. In your case.. 'A' heretical hat is correct.
It really does only apply to H though for some reason... P is silent in Psychologist for example, but you wouldn't use 'an' before psychologist, in any context. All words beginning with H have a vowel after them. There isnt a single one that doesn't
