Nice idea, but it will cost a fair bit in the long term if you are on PAYG.
The reason is the data costs of transferring the maps, location etc.
If you are on contract and have unlimited internet then that's great, but PAYG users may suffer badly. I'm on orange so it's not too bad, in one day I pay for internet up to the value of £1 but after that it's free, so I don't use it often but when I use it I make sure I get my pounds wrorth!

how recent is this software? i've got a k850i and i can only see it works up to the k800i

it can use Bluetooth GPS recivers
just downloaded it to my E71 which s a few months old havent used it yet
i use Google maps would like to get OS stuff on like i had on my Windows based PDA phone but cant find a way yet
I have a Blackberry that can either connect to a GPS antenna unit through Bluetooth (got one for about £20) but if I don't use that, software like Googlemaps will triangulate from nearby cell towers. It doesn't really have much accuracy - sometimes gives CEP (Circular Error Probable) of over 1000 metres!
But it gives a rough idea of where you are!
If you only want to find north and south for your phone you can use a piece of software called Compass.
I am not entirely sure what version I use is, none the less, I can find north and south without incurring data charges, by sun or moon placement, all calculated internally using algorithms I can't exactly comprehend. But it's accuracy when either sun or moon are visible is extremely high.
For maps, I do use a couple of different programs which use mapping systems which must be downloaded at the time of use. I do not have a blue tooth gps receiver but the programs are good for maps in urban locations. Programs such as google maps.
