very effective i'v heard, far better than those rubbish 'pocket chainsaws' but like most saws you do need to know how to sharpen and maintain it or it will stop working fairly quickly.

a couple of bits of hazel will sort out the handles

The 'proper' handles for them are just two hard-wood wooden handles that fit in the holes.
I'll post a picture of them (when i can find me camera!)

Very interesting bit of kit. I suspect that tool I see poking its head out of the pouch is the "set" for setting the pitch of the teeth, am I right?

Yep, the full kit includes a set, file and handles.

They require two people to use well, but they are very effective - as good as a 4' misery whip

My dad had one of those in his shed, I don't think he rated it very highly because he binned the saw and gave me the case, which I still have but have yet to find a decent use for. I know it was in a set of tools my elder brother bought at a farm sale, which turned out to be ex MOD, and were originally part of the equipment of a Bren Gun Carrier, the operators manual for which I still have somewhere.
