Yip, i managed to find a really wonderfull substance that catches the spark wonderfully and burns nice and slow enough to get wood onto. I usually use cat-tails (bullrush, greater reed mace) which catches easy but just lares in less than a second and if you dont have lots of dry stuff to catch can be frustrating.
The problem is its 'something' i have collected as i do to try out with later and i cant remember what the Hell it is or where i got it from!!!!

Will post a pic when i have one (my cam doesn't do macro).

For now though it is a pale slightly wirey almost waxy seed head (less than 1mm) strwawy in coulour, in a rough bunndle, the seeds are individual and have a 25mm 'tail' attached.

now i guesse no one is going to now what it is fro that, but does anyone know of a resource i might be able to compare them with and work it out.

I mean it worked really well!!!

Im in the UK and have only collected what i though were common things and likely to be semi improved grassland plants.

Update!
Turns out it is from an ornimental tusock grass planted in my garden. the seeds takea spark really wel and there are lots of dead leaves and stems one thicker than the other which can make a perfect little firestarter.
However befoer i go on too much, i remember there was reedmace in the last lot to - i dont think it was that that cought though.. going to play now

?

Did you spark with firesteel or with traditional flint and steel?

I have some pampus grass near me. I might try that.

I was using a firesteel, and have to confess that i tried again earlier today with no success...perhaps i was a bit to quick to post.
I think the combination was this seed bull rush and a wide dry grass leaf (of a different species) i thought it was this seed that had cought, but t was dark. Either way this combination i will try with more!
Seems there are lots of dry seeds and stuff around at the moment.

I should admit that im still at the strike direct to flame stage - im sure there are many people who would dispair at this and i should learn to work with an ember. Fleeting goes with a bow didnt go wel....
:-(
