Flandi Grind 6mm Bushy

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Well now, Dunc has kindly sent me the "Flandi" PFK to compare to the original

Initial impressions are....surprising.

A light 6mm spine scandy ground knife....nearly a third lighter than a 3mm knife of identical dimensions is........fascinating!

Only received it today and didn't crawl in till 0 dark 30 so no chance for proper tests. I have feathered some dry wood though and the planing cut is very sweet. I wondered if the shallow bevels would make this more difficult - not so though.

I have permission to whale the snot out of it (oops - I mean subject it to rigorous testing), so I will. I think it will baton very well - better than the original since the thicker spine will offer more resistance - be intrigued to see if I "dink" the edge on some seasoned oak. I did on mine!

The drop point should bore well too - the tapers are lovely and should help that along no end.

I fancy on a little meat and veg test that pure slicing is slightly less keen than the original - but I bet edge retention and resilience will be better

All in all for all round bushcraft work I think Dunc has come up with something really interesting here

well it's had an interesting effect on me! I must have viewed this thread about 20 times, and at first i really wasn't sure, but now i think it's a brilliant design! great work mate!

how much you want for it?? its bloody amazing! makes my old file made knives look like rusty butter knives, which they basically are. well done its lovely!

Duncan, that's a really nice knife you've made, I was wondering if you could explain what "DSG" means.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave
i assume you mean DSP :D its the model name TLA  all my knife models have one begining with D for Dorset (could be me as im Duncan) the SP for this is Sharp n Pointy :D

so DSP = Dorset Sharp n Pointy

based on British's Reds PFK ( Precision Field Knife) By a proper Knife maker Stuart Mitchel

plus its a new idea concept so needs testing properly first to make sure it works

hey i'm probably being quite dim here but i've got to ask, in the last picture with the blue glows, is that a computer effect or have you put LEDs in the handle?? as tricky as doing so may be it could be a pretty useful feature for at night, im often having to root around in the dark looking for the knife i just put down for a second ;)

The blue glow is, as I recall, luminous powder built into the pins. Bit freaky when I left the knife on my desk! As you say - odd, but useful!

Dunc is making one for one of my team and I imagine it will get a pretty good test!

For me, I think its a great interpretation of the original - and indeed has a lot to commend the improvements.

ah i see, thanks for clearing that up for me, im glad i wasnt being completely dim. luminous pins makes a lot more sense than LEDs, i was wondering why i couldnt find an on switch in any of the pictures :P
