I might be going fishing soon. Location is a smallish tidal estuary - about 1km from the sea. At this time of year what kind of fish are likely to be around and so what type of bait and tackle are best to use?

Mainly species tolerant of brackish water, I'd say Flounder and Eels would be the main target this time of year.
Fish on the bottom, fairly light, rag, lug or even lobworm for bait, small(ish) hooks and some attractor beads.

Bass will be starting to breed soon, so will be at their breeding sites and not be going that far up an estuary.

i agree as above, the other possibility is mullet sometimes we get them up by us but then catching them is a whole new ball game. Something i like to do is scope the venues out with some binos low water is good for this to see what foods about also if you see cormorants watch them for a while and you can get an idea of what species are about by what they bring up
