Well last week I had my first by-pass surgery. Back in November my cardiologist had scheduled me for a heart catheterization. I’d already gotten a stent I placed a few years ago. This time they said the damage was too much for a stent son they scheduled me for the CABG (Coraonary Artery Bypass Graft——pronounced “cabbage”) I put them off a couple of weeks while I made preparations (finding long term care for Barbara with her dementia, getting our daughter to take care of the dog I’m keeping and finding a new home for the other. Etc.) Several perperatory tests later and I went in for the surgery. Spent a week in coronary/neural ICU before transferring to rehab and I’ll be her another 10 days or so.

Everything went well but I wouldn’t recommend it if you can avoid it. My surgeon drew the bypasses on the heart pillow before he autographed it.

Hello
Pleased to hear it went well - thats an awful lot of serious medical intervention and life stress -rest well and heal up even better.

I am so sorry that you have had to go through this Dan, but so pleased that it sounds you are feeling more like yourself and on the mend. I hope recovery goes well, is really thorough, and you have a brilliant quality of life afterwards.

I hope Barbara finds quiet contentment and it puts you and your daughter's minds easy. It's a hard thing for the whole family to deal with.

My Dad had a triple bypass, this was about 13 years back.

He is back to normal now but it took several years and a lot of careful self care.

My disconcert was at the how blase everyone was. But of course, Open Heart Surgery is mainstream now.

From a lifelong teetotaller, he's now on a glass of Red every evening. (He was at the John Radcliffe, in Oxford, so with world class care).

So, keep mellow, look after yourself carefully and keep the corkscrew to hand.

(And nice to hear from you again).

Heck of an operation still even though it’s routine now, frightening too. Well it is to me lol.
Here’s hoping for a full and fast recovery for you mate

Thanks everybody. Recovery is progressing. Physical Therapy has taken me off fall restrictions and allowing me to walk around unsupervised now. This morning they put ankle weights on me for stair climbing exercises.

@ Toddy the good news with Barbara is Nikole and Carson got to have Thanksgiving Dinner with her at the memory care unit. They host it the week before and open to the patients’ families. She seems to be adapting well so far but I miss her: I was her 24/7 caregiver until this came up.

The oldest grandson, James, (Nikole’s older son, Carson’s brother) is about halfway through his posting in Germany.

Next update: I’ve been home for a couple of weeks and they’ve cleared me to drive again although I still have a 10 pound lifting limit for another couple of weeks.

I’ve been to see Barbara a few times now and did a little Christmas decorating of her room. I got here a miniature treeand taped the few Christmas cards she gotten to the inside of the door. I also hung a wreath on the outside of the door.
