Just finished my first attempt at making a belt sheath for a new knife. Quite pleased with the outcome although I learned a few "oh, I won't do it that way again" type lessons. The marvels of hindsight.......

A couple of pics....

Thanks for your positive comments folks - means a lot!

Mistakes to learn from for me were;

Don't cut the stitch groove on the reverse side until after drilling the holes as the line didn't match up exactly on the reverse side,

Dampen the leather before dyeing and use a proper dauber - the cotton bud (!!) left scratch marks which I just about managed to cover up when I did a second coat (and then light third) using a few swabs (good old first aid kit......)

I also wonder about pre-dyeing the back of the sheath under/around where the belt loop is stitched but that's not a major concern I guess.

I'd probably also think about cutting the grooves around the firesteel holder whilst it was flat i.e before putting it in place for gluing/stitching.

yup been there done most of them too

even now I have the odd 'Arrrrrh' moment when I realise that i've forgotten to do something so simple as sewing the belt loop before starting sewing it all together :lmao:

I think the main thing to learn is take your time and know when to cut the stitching and start again ;)

Thanks folks - really appreciate all the positive feedback, and really enjoyed trying a new craft; I think I'll have a go at a 'possibles pouch' next...:naughty:

Blooming good first sheath. I only wish my third had gone that well! Got all sewn up and B****r me if I hadn't made it a 'lefty' when marking up. How can anyone with a (supposed!) degree of intelligence make such a basic mistake?
So anyone with a custom Stu Barker knife need a LH sheath?:eek: :eek: :eek:
