Hi Everyone

I'm after some advise. I am having problems getting hold of decent plasters. The ones I get from the chemist seem to come off at the first sign of water :( Does anyone know where to get hold of truely waterproof plasters.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike,

In my experience the waterproof plasters all come off quite easily.

If you want a plaster that will stay on the best bet would be to get holder of one of those strip plasters that you cut to size.

In recent times these have been frowned upon because they are no individually wrapped, but if it is for personal use there is no problem just keep them in a plastic bag.

These large strips can be useful for other things, I cut one down a few weeks to do a tempory fix when my wing mirror came adrift.

Cheers

I've always found that the so called water proof plasters will just drop of at the first sign of water too. When I was buying stuff for my first aid kit, I bought a whole load of stuff from ebay including this box of plasters and I have had them stay on through all sorts of stuff, even washing my hands after doing some work in the work shop and the seller was great to do business with as well.

Hi Mike
Steve's right, you want to get some of the strip plasters, although they come in two varieties; plastic and cloth. The best are the cloth ones, they will stay on through almost everything. Be warned the adhesive they use has a tendency of sticking to your skin when trying to take them off :( , they are also very good at removing any hairs that may have got stuck underneath

Your other option is to use the standard plasters and wrap some zinc oxide tape over the top, that'll keep them on.

Ah, ebay, never thought to look there... seems that same box is sold for £7.20 + P&P elsewhere.

How about Duct Tape? ;)

Sounds silly but I tend to use kids 'character' plasters  - had a batch of wallace and gromit ones and they lasted longer than elastoplast waterproof ones i had

Was odd as they are a plasticy kind of construction but thet stic to themselves well which i think helps!

I like the Blue ones. They are zinc oxide I think and seem to stick.

A lot of the problem with them sticking is down to hypoallegnic glue so they will stick to themselves but not skin.

I use normal plasters and Gutter tape (floristry tape), put the plaster on then rap a bit of gutter tape round. Water proof and the surface is a bit grippy.
The only prob when you take it off, is the sticky stays sticky on ya pinky. :lmao:

I'm in the fabric plaster team for this one. Plonk 'em on and forget about it. Until they fall off. Feel a bit funny when damp, but they stay on, which seemed to be the point of 'em.

Just don't let me stir food with my bare hands :lmao:

Use bog standard fall off plasters, then smother them in zinc oxide tape - or gaffa tape if your desperate. Seems to work quite well. There was an article in the BMJ (British Medical Journal) sometime ago about the healing properties of gaffa tape - apparently something in the glue is particularly good at removing warts and veruca's - faster than "tradtional" remidies. I gave it a go put felt like a right tool walking around with a silver plaster which was blatently gaffa tape!!!

I've got to second both the cut-to-size strips and gaffer tape.

A combination of those closed a nasty little lump I took off my pinkie-knuckle with a grannie-b whilst gardening. Plaster covered the wound, gaffer immobilised the finger whilst the flap 'stuck'

(Axe gardening is a great pastime. My garden looks like Vietnam circa 1968 after the GIs had been through when I've been out there. Stops the missus nagging fo a bit. Try it.)
