Yes, a tarred shack smells nice too and burns beautifully! Which in some cases actually might be a problem. The oldest wooden buildings in Scandinavia are Norwegian churches "Stavkyrkor?". They have been preserved with tar and intact roofs.

Yes, they are called Stave Churches.

Seen a few. Fantastic. The carvings are outstanding.

They used wood that was treated in a special way before the tree was felled. Full of resin.
