Either knock on the nearest door and ask (if its farm land, or borders it, go to the farm), or try the local pub (especially if its a 'locals' pub), but your local land registry will have all this infomation, but may charge you for the service.

Who owns Scotland? is pretty handy up here. I'm surprised shoving "Who owns England" into google doesn't throw up something similar.

Don't know how up to date the Scottish one is but I know a property on it that recently changed owners so will keep an eye out and see when they pick up on it.

unfortunatly a massive ammount of England/Wales is not accounted for.. a property only enters the land registry database if it is sold.. most of the big estates who own large areas of the countryside are not registered (if you were the duke of devonshire would you want the tax man knowing exactly what you had??) that said a lot of information is avalible from the land registry and its certainly worth going down there for a look!
