Everyone knows about Murphy's Law, which states, in its simplest formulation "Anything that can go wrong, will". There is a well known corollary to this, namely "Even if nothing can possibly go wrong, it will anyway"

I thought we should put together a list of Bushcraft Laws of this ilk. Here's some to start us off.

(The most well known bushcraft one) No matter where you sit, smoke blows directly into your face.

Whittler's Law: You will cut yourself.
Corollary: If you don't cut yourself, you will slip and irreparably damage what you were carving instead.

Batteries die. Rechargable batteries die more quickly.

Great photographic opportunities only arise when you do not have a camera.
Corollary: In the time it takes to get a camera out of your pocket, the subject will disappear.

Perfect campsites spotted from a distance turn out not to be suitable on closer inspection.
Corollary 1: You have to go back to the site you spotted earlier instead.
Corollary 2: That one turns out to be unsuitable as well.

The minimum temperature in any given night will be lower than the minimum temperature of your sleeping bag.

Meths stoves go out about a minute prior to achieving a rolling boil.
Corollary: On being refilled, they will be found to have not gone out after all.

Midges, mosquitos and ticks greatly prefer the flavour of you to that of your companions.
Adjunct: They like the taste of all insect repellants too.

Waterproofs aren't.

Your rucksack capacity is 5 litres less than needed.

Kit packed into a rucksack instantly doubles in weight and volume.

Regardless of your location, your mobile phone will not have any signal.

Cordage is never quite as long as needed.
Corollary: If it is, it will break.

Trees move so as to be the wrong distance apart for hammocking.
