I'm in the process of filing down a bit of 01 steel for a knife. I saw a website with someone using a file guide so had a go at making one.
I used a big block of wood out a skip, an offcut of dexian I had in the shed, a piece of metal rod from a skip and cut some clamps out of a strip of metal, drilled holes, used nuts & bolts etc from the tool box. The angles are approximate, but fairly close. It's most like my Lansky sharpener.

 nice job! i dont get how it works though
I like it too :D

Let me see...
File is clamped to rod (that's the 2 sets of metal on the white section of rod)
Rod goes through the hole in the upright at the back (it's not painted white though so you probably can't see it)
As the end of the file is at a fixed height the angle you are filing at is kept constant - you just have to watch the rod doesn't slip out of the hole on the backstroke :)
Quite ingenious really, makes me wonder why there aren't more about! In fact, if I could get hold of some tool steel and find someone willing to do the heat treating, I'd be making some knives :D grinding the bevel has always put me off

Thank you for the comments, I have seen commercial versions, but hate spending cash
I drilled a small hole through the rod end and put a split pin through it, its enough to stop the backstroke.
