To be honest a trick I usually use is just moisten a make up removal pad with water,
and then add the dye, spread the dye through the pad by pressing the pad together. and a if I want it a bit darker/heavier I add some more dye to the pad.
Keep in mind that this only works for smooth or gradient stuff, as one of the effects of the water will be that you cant make a abrupt line as everything is smooth.

For other stuff like that "abrupt lines" in your dyeing job, I would indeed look towards the products made for the purpose, keep in mind that it is ( the ones I have anyhow) are not spirit based and do not very much like contact with spirits.
Hope that helps. I do not personally have any experience yet with the dye thinner from fiebings so cant give any comment on that.
