Fallkniven S1 handle

Hi folks,

I've decided to purchase a Fallkniven S1, but am struggling to decide whether to buy the standard knife with thermorun handle or to buy just the blade and have a wood handle put on it.

Unfortunately I'm unable to handle one before purchase.

For those who have handled them (or any of the other thermorun Fallknivens), does the handle have that slightly sticky feeling similar to the rubber handled Mora Clipper, or is it different? Also, what's it like size wise, in medium size male hands?

Cheers,

B.

I've handled them and would personally go for a bare blade and get a talented soul to whack some nice scales on. Its not really "sticky" but I found the squareness of the handle less pleasing than a more anatomical grip. That said with a formed grip you will also need a sheath making so it will cost more than a factory model

I reckon it depends upon what you are doing with it.

If you are using it for food prep and messy stuff, but not for carving or harder jobs the thermorum may be fine. If it is your main user and you can afford it get a stabilised wood handle with leather sheath - that F1 I did recently was lovely when it went off to it's new home.

Horses for courses.

The Thermorun checkered grips are similar to the checkered grips of the Clipper, but a little harder.

This is an S1 with the checkered grips trimmed-off with a pocket knife which makes it a little kinder to an un-gloved hand when cutting with force (such as when shaving kindling feathers from dense wood as illustrated below)

This illustrates the narrow square back that Red mentioned

This gives you an idea of the distance between the inside edge of the finger guard and the ‘beak’ at the rear of the handle

If you had a custom handle that was shaped to fit your own hand put on a blade then I imagine you would probably have a more comfortable handle.

Hope this helps,
Paul.
