H1.........
I'm a heretic

No you are not mate:D.

I have both, if you are not used to having virtually no gaurd then the F1 would be a go'er, but the H1 is just as good a knife in every way as the F1 is, it is designed as a hunters knife, the hunters and old trappers were probably the best bushcrafters around in many ways. The H1 though has a Kraton grip, this is slighlty warmer and grippier than the thermorun of the F1.

With both you may well have to put in a bit of work on the edge (you will see a fair amount of talk about the F1 regrind on here) to get the best setup for you, but once it is done then you are sorted.

Either will do the job, but if you really want a flatter grind than the typical convex of the Fallkiniven you could do a lot worse than consider a Master Hunter by Cold Steel. The MH comes witha flat grind, in a choice of Carbon or San Mai lll blade too. San Mai lll is a laminated blade just like the Fallknivens. This will save you reprofiling an F1 and the knives are very similar in all but grind (The MH is a little bigger but not much)

I've had a MH in Carbon V for a while now and have been happy using it for tasks and situations where my Fallkniven A2 might be considrered a little OTT. It has performed well and I now rarely go out without it.
I recently treated myself to the San Mai lll version to do a comparison with, and then today I was given an F1 as payment for rehandling a guys knife for him with antler ! I'll be giving all 3 knives a good testing and evaluation over the next few months and will hopefully get around to posting a review/comparison on them when I've given them all a fair crack of the whip.

Which model would you reccomend for General bushcraft and abit of carveing? F1? S1?

Matt :)

Hi Matthew

I think you're quite close to where I am. If you want to try out an F1 you can have a go with mine and see what you think.

I'm out tomorrow morning in Wharncliffe if that suits. PM me or give me a ring on the moby 07920 468007 if that suits.

Cheers

Getting the chance to actually try an F1 and hear what the owner thinks is a wonderful opportunity to quickly find whether it's the knife for you!

The Master Hunter is a great knife along the lines of the F1 but with longer handle and blade. It also has a thinner blade and more continuous curvature to tip. I convexed mine to a very acute edge since it's mostly used for slicing. I think a lot of people would be interested in a comparison.
