Hi all,

I'm curious to hear your opinions on various UK bow woods. I'd like to make a bow out of some wood growing near us here in Somerset, so I guess the tree would have to be a fairly common UK tree.

First up, how good is Hazel? This guy seems to make quite a few bows out of it: https://sites.google.com/site/delsbows/ . I'd be interested to know how it compares to ash. Is it generally worse than ash? Perhaps it is better in tension than ash is.

Sycamore is another possibility perhaps, would this be better or worse than ash?
There are a few wych elm trees near us, perhaps this is significantly better than ash, sycamore etc. Are there any other trees to look out for?
Cherry might be a good one to go for I think.

Thanks a lot for any help you can provide. one last thing, has anyone tried alder?

Milo.
