I am struggling using the W&D mousepad technique to get my F1 sharp. In my bodged attempts I have used many sheets of W&D and I am no worried, that I have damaged the grind of my knife.

I fear I have thickened up the edge of the blade, the knife wont shave, cut paper cleanly and feels hard to use.

Can anyone recommend someone who can give it some attention, willing to pay for postage time and materials

Thanks

Andy

Andy,
nip over to British Blades forum and ask there. I can sharpen pretty well, but there will be someone there who may be better at re-profiling than me. I'm sure you will find someone who is more than willing to help you :)
Mike.

Drop Longstrider a PM. He's a wizzard at reprofiling convex edges so that they cut. He has a large fallkniven the A1 I believe and he can shave with it.

Hi Andy, If you have thickened the edge by using too much pressure on the mouse mat sharpener it will take the removal of more steel than you might imagine to get it back to a decent angle. Being convex it needs to be sharpened over the WHOLE of the grind so even though it might only mean removing a tenth of a millimeter of steel, this has to be done evenly over the whole side of the blade, both sides.

There are very few blades that cannot be made good again with a little know-how and a measure of patience and time. If yours is still cutting OK-ish but won't take a real "shaving sharp" edge anymore it shouldn't take too much effort to put it right again.

If you would like me to look at it for you I will do so gladly for the price of postage and a couple of sheets of wet-n-dry. Drop me a line via PM and we can sort things from there if you want me to "have a word with it". ;)

Must say a "Thank you" to Bardster for the kind comment too.

With a new handle I made and a box to keep it in.

Yes, it shaves! And I made the box with dovetail corners and sliding top.

That Thor is a good looking blade. ;) Got to treat myself to an NL1 when I'm a rich man..... :D Too busy spending my pocket money on stuff to make my own knives with at the moent though.

Please don't tell us that yours lives in that box and never gets dirty....

Right as rain Red!
That bit 'o steel is going Moose hunting next season.

I only made the box because the handle is an inch longer than the original and so won't fit the box it came in (17 inches long overall). Didn't feel safe shipping it without some protection.

I had a similar thing happen to one of my little SAK's, Andy. For a ages I was using the mousepad/wet dry technique but stupid me, I ended up only sharpening the edge bevel. It took me a while to figure out why the edge was folding so easily. Sure, it was razor sharp but not for very long. It didn't occur to me until much later why the blade was basically useless, I had removed so much metal from the edge bevel but next to nothing from the rest of the blade. I stopped using the mousepad/wet dry technique after that, now I just lay a flat piece of sandpaper onto my wooden desk, raise the back of the blade as I would on a whetstone and sharpen like I would a flat grind. I even do that on my Clipper now.

Just my two cents,

Adam

There is a guy at BB going by the name og GUYCEP

He specialises in conves edges,

I have a couple of blades by him and i can honestly say that i have never in my life seen of felt a blade as sharp as these.

I would drop him a line. He is busy as he is going into the marines soon. but he is really very very good.

You guys should look on the official fallkniven website forum (aka Knifeforums.com)

http://knifeforums.com/forums/showforum.php?fid/65/ (the forum address)

There is a knife sharpening tutorial with loads of info on there, still got a question? add it to the bottom and increase the knowledge held there!

http://knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/751826/ (the actual knife tutorial)

I actually found out about this place because of there, its worth a gander for fallkniven or general knife queries :)

Hope that helps

Craig.

If you put the abrasive paper (or whatever its called) on your thigh the pressure will be perfect, soft and stiff at the same time. I did that to my F1 and my kitchen knives that I cut myself with just looking at them :)
