I recall reading (forget where) that "coshes" or clubs were often made by introducing flint shards into thin Ash saplings.

Over time, the tree grabbed tight ahold . Then the tree was felled (what with) and fashioned into a war-club.

I do recalled being puzzled; why wait eh? presumably there was already at hand, some implement for felling trees.

Think the book was Michener,s "Poland".

Yeah Ahjno, add the tree. It has a year-round use for getting rid of people you don't like.

I saw a photo (a postcard IIRC) where a bike had been chained to a tree and left there.

The pic showed that the tree had grown around it and all that was sticking out were the front and back forks and the saddle!

I don't know why but I find that picture disturbing. I've got a kind of phobia of foreign objects being inside living things. Especially when the object is still partially visible, it makes me feel ill.

An old man that I used to visit very proudly showed me a souvenir of what he had found whilst milling a large piece of timber. A civil war soldiers helmet. C 1600. He thought that this had been placed in the fork of two branches and been forgotten,or it's wearer killed. The saw marks were plainly visible as this had wrecked the blade! The tree had grown around this over the years, completely swallowing it and protecting the iron from the ravages of time.

In the area where I live (The Netherlands) the trees probably have many splinters of explosives inside them. During the Second World War heavy fightings were going on here.
Now, the forest will not be felled, because no one wants to do that. They simply wait till the trees are dying and fall down theirselves.
And it's very nice to spend some time walking there.

Although it doesn't disturb me as much, it's not a nice thing to look at and i would pass it by quickly

Early last century, one of my great uncles found a trade musket - that had been left in the fork of a tree. All that was sticking out was the end of the barrel.

He chopped it out. Suprisingly, even the stock was still in pretty good shape (for having been stuck inside a tree for 150 years). The musket is currently housed at the Minnesota Historical Society.
