Hello,

I want to go to the land down under the land down under soon and wonder what edible plants I might find there.

Do you know a good source of information?
A book, a website, a video podcast, a forum...?

Do you have experiences from NZ?

Looking forward to gain some knowledge about the bushfood at my new destination.

Thanks!

...really!???

Nobody??

I thought that would be easier...

I try again, may someone who reads this knows a source of information, otherwise I'll need to try in NZ when I arrive there.

Would anyone of you be interested in getting such information, meaning shall I post them here?

Best regards!

Hi,

The book you need is:

A Field Guide To Native Edible Plants of New Zealand
By Andrew Crowe

Published By Penguin NZ

IBSN 0 14 301922 8

It's by far and away the best book on the subject available here...

Well Illustrated with both line drawings and photographs with a water proof cover and a handy ruler built in Approx $29.99 availible in most good book stores such as Whitcoulls.

Hope this helps

John

suggestion: if you plan to travel around by car- get yourself an airgun(until last year available without any form of licence required)- there plenty of rabbits, hares and feral turkeys around
and yummy eels in the rivers!

I understand the intent in your suggestion.

However it's a bad idea for a couple of reasons.

1. Shooting an Air gun on Private land without the owners permission is a really bad idea and illegal.
2. Airguns are not allowed to be used on DOC ( Department of Conservation) land. You are only able to use a centre fire rifle on the DOC estate, No Air Rifles, Rim fire or Shotguns.

The Police treat air rifles as fire arms so traveling around with one in the car is inviting trouble.

Thanks

John

At least I found some information on what NOT to eat ;-)
http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/publications/infosheets/poisonplants/poisplants_intro.asp

Not getting into details really, but providing some overview:
http://www.wildhealthfood.com/gather-wild-edible-plants-weeds
http://www.wildhealthfood.com/why-eat-wild-herbs-and-edible-plants

A blogspot page on edibles around Wellington (not too NZ specific I'm afraid)
http://wildpicnic.blogspot.com/

I guess the web is not really growded with information on wild edibles in NZ...
Will get me the book soon!
