By 1904, it could have been any kind of mutt.

Ah ha, I thought it might have been Edward Curtis! He had a really interesting life, living with and photographing different native american communities all around the US and Canada. I have a book about him and it includes a lot of his photos... really stunning! If you search 'Edward Curtis' on Amazon loads of photo books come up
