I have quite a small head though so it sits on my eyebrows which irritates the heck out of me - obviously SWMBO has a smaller head than me

It's wool, and when on is best pulled down over the ears / neck and the peak should just stick out as a cap peak would, or you could wear it backwards to keep the winter sun off your neck.
