Yea I signed it, it's not fun looking at a £5k bill ontop of buying a car and the associated petrol costs.

Edit to Add;

My boss came up with a soloution, if insurance has to be mandatory the government should have a discount scheme covering just the basics at a fair FLAT rate, not the system we have not based on post code and risk associated with age.

Further to your update, I think that would be a great idea. Shame we've got the Tories in...they certainly won't allow anything like that. It shouldn't be legal for people to be scammed like that.

Who voted for them anyway? I'm surprised we haven't been catapulted back into the middle ages yet...

Oh do leave off with the socialist diatribe - politics breaks the forum rules.

Well now, it seems to me that you don't want to pay the market rate for your car insurance. I assume you expect someone else to pay for your car's running costs for you?

As they always say - socialism is fine - until you run out of other peoples money.

Not exactly. I don't mind paying a reasonable rate, but I just don't want to be robbed blind, especially when I drive a sensible car, work and have a good, clean record of careful driving. It's not a case of not paying market price, it's a case of enough is enough. No one's wages are going to suffer if they brought the premiums down a little. It's all about combating the greed.

All politics is just ideology put into practice. Socialism is not the answer for this country, but in my opinion, Ol' Dave isn't either.

You do know there is a way to get the rates you want (for yourself and others) without petitions, government, and with NO POLITICS involved. Just start your own company and put the competion out of business. I suspect if you charged the rates you would like to pay the competition would be out of business in a few months at most. If their prices really are exhorbitant and unjustified then you'll also be making a nice profit. Of course if their prices really are proportionate, well then it might be you who goes out of business. In any case, there's only one way to find out.

Great idea santaman.

The OP thinks there is a market opportunity and a need......if its that easy, why not?

Brilliant. Very droll.

Vulpes I really don't mean to sound unsympathetic. I'm not happy paying it either. Mine's about $1150/year now that I'm the sole driver with only one vehicle (and that's with a pick-up and the good driver rate. I can only imagine it with a teenager and/or a sports car) It was about double that when my daughter was still on my policy (and she too had the good driver rate)

Unfortunately, it is what it is.

Good suggestion :D . I took a different route :D . I didn't like paying the insurance premium, the tax, the MOT, the fuel. So I switched to a (pedal) bike ~ with the occasional lift from swmbo if trips/needs coincide.

There's always an additional choice or two ~ even if they don't appeal to you or are logistically difficult, they're still additional options ;) . Sometimes you just need to jump in with both feet ;)

The biggest thing to remember with insurance companies is that you really need to shop around. Find out whether the company you're already with can be beaten ~ and, if they are charging high, challenge them to give a more competitive quote ;) .

my 17 year old nephew has been quoted 7k for a bottom of the range Clio worth 2k max !!

Yeah. But when I said "sports car" I wasn't referring to the cost of replacing the car making the premiums go up, rather the likelihood of the driver being sued by someone else injured and those costs. Usually it's the liability portion of the coverage that really drives up the rates the most. I don't know what a clio is so I cain't make an inteligent comparison on that, but a 17 year old? Yep, that'll do it. Especially a 17 year old boy.

I payed £2300 for my first year of insurance. I was 20 though. Didn't think it would get worse than that. I'll make a legal suggestion though - if you add, older, more experienced main drivers to the policy as named drivers, it pushes it down a lot. It's not fronting and is perfectly legal.
