Solid round bar usually.

I have seen somelight weight ones made of tubing though.

soloman - i made one following the directions on this thread

still use it today, and after upgrading the chain (i use a cable from an old weightlifting frame), it holds my very heavy dutch oven no probems. cost me about £15 all in

Just ordered a Lodge Dutch Oven from this lot. Postage was only £2.95 for the 10" one I've ordered. Quoted $158.00 p+p for the equivalent Lodge Oven from the USA!!

My tripod is finnished and as usual for me its a bit over engineered but you could hang a baby elephant off it( you never know)and most important cost nothing.
Its a bit heavy but as it will usually used on canoe trips thats not a big issue.
