Any recommendations please ? It’s my next purchase I think plus I can use at home in oven as well as camping. For 2 people so thinking 1,2 litres ? I need to get measuring jug out so I can picture a litre. Need to lug it a few miles. Ideally want a lid with a lip round top.
Thinking petromax unless there is others

All the cast iron ones will be fairly weighty, I have had good results with a Best Duty bake pot from a local South African Shop, If you are looking for something a bit lighter it may be worth having a look at a Bedourie made of spun steel so a bit less weight. It does bake a good loaf (that one tasted better than it looks!)

Petromax ovens are quite nice and they do lots of sizes and styles too.
They are very weighty and bulky though so we only use ours if we are car camping or in the garden.
I have seen cast aluminium Dutch ovens but never got hands on or used one but they must be much lighter than cast iron.

I have a lighter option called a bedourie oven from Australia its made of steel and is less than half the weight of a cast iron but slightly harder to cook with due to the lighter thinner metal. These also come in a few different sizes but are fairly hard to come by.

Good choice @captainhastings

I make bread in mine over the base of a Kelly Kettle.
There’s an article about it in the home page but I can’t find it.

Edited to add:
Found it!

Drop some embers into the top tray/dish towards the end of the cooking.

Enjoy.

Has anybody got info on why it is called dutch oven?

It's to do with the casting technique of the metal. Originally in the Netherlands they used sand to cast brass pots (I think it ends up smoother than other casting methods), then in the proudest traditions of our nation, a British man went over and stole the idea and tried it with iron due to it being cheaper. As it was a Dutch casting technique, it ended up 'dutch oven'.

That may be a little harsh on us Brits. After all, some might interpret that as innovation/building on an idea, rather than theft.
(Just feel we get a bit of a bad rap sometimes, as a nation).

I agree - that bit was said tongue in cheek really. Most good ideas are inspired by other ideas, standing on the shoulders of giants and all that.
