I was just thinking about it as i've been looking about for the books and I was wondering how many people play/have played and what. I've been looking about for the 1st edition stuff and not really worried about any of the other versions but I was wondering what you guys liked the best and why :D

I still have the old 3 volume A5 set with the wonky coloured dice... But the 2nd ed saw the most use...
Tend to play GURPS mostly these days, but more of a social night than gaming....

I always preferred the Basic set rather AD&D. Then moved on to Call of Cthulhu and then Palladium's games, Rifts, etc.

I knew I'd get Cthulhu into BCUK one day! (Fhtagn!)

I used to play it once. Got the basic as a present as a kid then a few of us got into a playing group every saturday at one mate's house (actually it was the house of our cub group's Arkela). Show's how old we were. I think we played AD&D 1st edition shortly after it came out. I haven't played it since then. We were about 10 years old. Sorry I didn't even know about the other editions so don't know if they were any better. All I remember was the dice came with a white crayon so you could crayon over the faces of your dice then rub the excess away to leave the numbers showing up white due to being filled in with the crayon.

I used to get a magazine as well IIRC and they would have scenarios for different games. One of whihc was Call of Cthulhu. There was something about a guy who was kind of part of his sword. Something about his energy and the energy of the sword (flaming with a funny colour of course) being the same. Sounded a good game at the time.

When I went into a comic book shop to get a D&D set up I was just completely shocked by the ammount of game books and types of boards..

The guy in the shop pointed me into a 'more simple' directiona nd I came out with the world of warcraft board game, played it a few times and it's very cool. this one >> http://www.amazon.co.uk/World-of-Wa...2388/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1308574515&sr=8-2

It's a 4 player game though and alot of my buddies aren't around much. (game takes 4 hours too!)

Tunnels and trolls was brought out in the 70s directly for that reason: it could be played solo and a number of solo scenarios were released. It was quite a fun system, a bit more simplistic than AD&D with some humour injected. It could be played with a group as well.

Like AD&D it's now in a 4th/5th/6th (?) edition.

I cant' remember which edition AD&D I played as a young 'un, but I do remember having a Player's Manual, Monster Manual and a DM's Guide. I bought the new 'starter pack' for my ten year old last Christmas, thinking he might like it, but frankly it sucks. It's really difficult to get started IMO, especially for an impatient 10 year old. The version I played thirty odd years ago was much more straightforward when starting out.

I also like Traveller - my old man found my book set recently during an attic clear out, and I couldn't bring myself to chuck 'em out, despite the musty smell!

LOL

I have traveller as well.

Does anyone play Carcasonne board game, even less geeky people play that. Worth a look if you haven't, quick and easy to learn.

I cant believe nobodies mentiioned shadowrun or whitewolf
2nd Ed AD&D is still the best tho, although i use the players option addons, which makes it a sort of 2.5
