This program about the weather is worth a watch:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01f893x/Horizon_20112012_Global_Weirding/

It explained how Europe is particularly susceptible to freezing temperatures, when we enter a period of low solar activity, [which is cyclicical], whereby sunspot activity decreases on the surface of our sun, the result being that the gulfstream, normally travelling from the Americas, over Britain, is veered off by a coldfront from the East before it reaches Britain.

And as global warming continues, how the freezing cold air over the arctic will be displaced, not dissapearing, but moving in a southerly direction, settling over countries like the UK.

In 1650, a particulary cold spell began, and in 1677 the Thames froze solid for months.

It seemed to be suggesting that even though nobody knows, Britain may be in for another 'Little Ice Age' within our lifetimes. Kind of a frozen post apocolyptic vision of a dystopian future then....

Bet there was a lot of yellow (and brown) snow around once the main method of sewage disposal froze!
